Smart blinds sound like one of those home upgrades that are nice to have but not exactly necessary. After installing motorized shades from Yoolax and connecting them to my smart home, I can definitely see the appeal.

I’ve always liked the idea of being able to control my window shades automatically. Opening them in the morning, closing them when the sun gets too intense, or adjusting them without getting off the couch. Simple conveniences, but ones that can make a home feel a little smarter.

Of course, motorized window treatments can also get expensive pretty quickly, especially when you’re dealing with custom sizes and multiple windows.

That’s where Yoolax comes in. The brand specializes in customizable window treatments, including motorized roller shades, cellular shades, sheer shades, and other styles designed to work with modern smart home systems.

More Less

Yoolax provided me with samples of two products to try: its Motorized Solar Roller Shades and Motorized Horizontal Sheer Shades. I went through the ordering process, measured my windows, installed the shades myself, and connected them to my existing Home Assistant smart home setup.

The experience was largely positive, although I did run into one unexpected issue involving the valances that required a little help from customer support.

Here’s how everything went, what stood out, and what I’d recommend knowing before placing an order.

What Is Yoolax?

Yoolax is a window treatment brand focused on made-to-order blinds and shades, with a particular emphasis on motorized options. Rather than purchasing standard sizes off a store shelf, you can customize shades to fit your windows and choose from different fabrics, finishes, mounting configurations, and motor technologies.

The product lineup covers a pretty wide range of needs. There are blackout shades for bedrooms, light-filtering options for living spaces, solar shades intended to reduce glare, and decorative designs that offer a softer look than traditional roller blinds.

One of the more interesting aspects of Yoolax is its approach to smart home compatibility.

Depending on the product, customers can choose between Bluetooth, Zigbee, and Matter motor options. These serve different needs, from someone who just wants convenient remote control to someone looking to incorporate their shades into an existing smart home ecosystem.

I fall firmly into the latter category.

My house already uses Home Assistant for a lot of everyday automation, so I wanted shades that could become part of that setup rather than requiring another completely separate system.

The ability to choose Zigbee motors was a major selling point for me, especially since it gave me the option to use the smart home infrastructure I already had.

Ordering Custom Yoolax Shades: Surprisingly Straightforward

Ordering custom window shades online initially sounded like something that could get complicated. Unlike buying a lamp or a piece of furniture, there’s very little room for error when you’re ordering something specifically manufactured to fit your windows.

Fortunately, Yoolax makes the customization process pretty approachable.

I was provided with two products to test:

For each shade, I started by choosing the fabric color and mount type. From there, I entered my window measurements using the guidance provided on Yoolax’s website.

The measurement tutorial video was particularly helpful. It clearly explained how to measure everything, which made me considerably more comfortable entering dimensions for a custom-manufactured product.

After settling on the sizes, I selected the Zigbee motor option and worked through the additional customization choices.

These included the optional MeasureFit Guarantee, a 16-channel remote control, solar panels, motor placement, roll position, valance style, and bottom rod finish.

There are quite a few decisions to make, but I actually appreciated having that level of control. Rather than settling for a one-size-fits-all design, I could configure the shades around my specific windows and preferences.

Once the order was placed, Yoolax emailed me an order confirmation listing the exact specifications and options I had selected.

The email also asked me to double-check everything and contact the company within 24 hours if any changes were needed.

I thought this was a particularly nice touch. Mistakes happen, especially when you’re entering several different measurements, and having that final opportunity to review everything before manufacturing begins is reassuring.

Everything looked correct, so I didn’t need to make any changes. After the 24-hour review period, my order was sent to the factory.

Shipping, Packaging, and Delivery

Because Yoolax shades are custom-made, ordering them isn’t quite like purchasing something that’s already sitting in a warehouse waiting to ship.

There’s a manufacturing period to account for, followed by the actual delivery time.

In my case, the shades took approximately one week to be manufactured and shipped. Once they were on their way, it took another four business days for the packages to arrive at my door.

Considering these weren’t off-the-shelf products, I thought that was a pretty reasonable turnaround.

I also appreciated that the order confirmation clearly laid out the customization details before manufacturing began. When you’re waiting for something made specifically for your home, it’s nice knowing exactly what’s being produced.

All of the shades arrived well packaged, and nothing was damaged during shipping.

That’s particularly important with window treatments, since the packages can be long and somewhat awkward. A bent rail or damaged component could make installation considerably more frustrating, especially when dealing with precisely measured windows.

Thankfully, I didn’t encounter any of those problems.

Everything arrived in good condition and was ready for installation.

The overall experience from placing the order to receiving the products was refreshingly uneventful. And when ordering custom home products online, uneventful is exactly what you want.

Installing the Yoolax Motorized Shades

One of my biggest questions before receiving the shades was how difficult the installation would be.

I’ve tackled plenty of home improvement projects, but installing multiple custom window treatments still sounded like something that could become a full weekend project if things didn’t go according to plan.

As it turns out, installation was surprisingly easy.

Yoolax provides video instructions that walk through the process, and I found them extremely straightforward to follow. Rather than deciphering a complicated manual, I could simply watch the relevant steps and replicate them at each window.

The actual mounting process was much less intimidating than I expected.

After getting familiar with the installation procedure, the remaining shades were easier to tackle because I already knew what to expect.

I had all of the shades installed within a few hours.

For a multi-window project involving motorized shades, I was pretty happy with that.

Another welcome surprise was that the shades arrived already programmed to work with the included remote control. I didn’t have to spend time individually pairing each motor just to get the basic functionality working.

Once they were installed, I could immediately operate them using the remote.

That was especially convenient because it meant I could confirm the basic operation before moving on to the more advanced smart home integration.

If you’re comfortable using a drill and following a straightforward instructional video, installing these shades is a very manageable DIY project.

Just make sure to pay close attention to the space around your windows, particularly if you have other window treatments installed. I learned that lesson firsthand, which I’ll get into shortly.

Yoolax Motorized Solar Roller Shades: Practical Light Control

The first style I tried was the Yoolax Motorized Solar Roller Shades.

Solar roller shades are designed to reduce incoming sunlight and glare while still allowing some natural light into a room. Depending on the fabric’s openness percentage, they can also preserve a degree of visibility through the window.

They’re a particularly interesting option for spaces where you want to manage sunlight without making everything feel dark.

Yoolax offers different openness levels, including 1%, 3%, 5%, and 10% options. Generally speaking, lower openness means a tighter fabric weave, providing more light blockage and privacy at the expense of some outward visibility.

Higher openness allows more light through and typically provides a clearer view outside.

It’s worth remembering that solar shades aren’t necessarily blackout shades. They’re intended to manage sunlight rather than eliminate it entirely, and their privacy characteristics can change depending on lighting conditions.

From a design perspective, I like the simplicity of this type of window treatment.

Roller shades have a clean appearance and don’t introduce the visual clutter of traditional horizontal blinds. Their straightforward design also makes them well suited to motorization, with the shade moving up or down to adjust coverage.

For anyone dealing with strong afternoon sunlight, screen glare, or windows that are inconvenient to reach, the combination of solar fabric and motorized operation makes a lot of sense.

I also liked being able to configure details such as the roll position and top finish during ordering rather than having those decisions made for me.

Yoolax Motorized Horizontal Sheer Shades: A Softer, More Decorative Option

The second style I received was the Yoolax Motorized Horizontal Sheer Shades, which Yoolax also refers to as Shangri-La sheer shades.

These take a different approach to window coverage.

Instead of using a single continuous piece of roller fabric, horizontal sheer shades feature fabric vanes suspended between layers of sheer material. The result is a softer, more decorative appearance that combines elements of traditional blinds with the look of fabric shades.

One of the appealing features of this design is the ability to adjust the vanes to control how much light enters a room.

Rather than simply choosing between open and closed, the layered construction provides more flexibility in how sunlight is filtered.

It’s a style that makes sense for living rooms, dining rooms, or other spaces where the appearance of the window treatments is just as important as their practical function.

I also appreciate that Yoolax offers these with motorized operation.

Traditionally, decorative window shades like these might involve manually adjusting cords or wands. Motorization makes them much more convenient, particularly when you’re managing several windows.

Between the two styles, the solar roller shades are the more minimalist option, while the horizontal sheer shades offer a softer look.

Neither is necessarily better. They serve different purposes, and choosing between them really comes down to your room, lighting requirements, and personal taste.

Smart Home Integration: Zigbee, Home Assistant, and Alexa

This was probably the part of the experience I was most interested in.

A motorized shade is convenient on its own, but being able to integrate it into an existing smart home is where things get considerably more interesting.

When I placed my order, I specifically selected Yoolax’s Zigbee motor option.

Zigbee is a wireless communication protocol commonly used by smart home devices. It’s particularly appealing for home automation because compatible products can communicate through a Zigbee network rather than relying entirely on individual Wi-Fi connections.

My home already uses Home Assistant, so choosing Zigbee allowed me to incorporate the shades into the system I was familiar with.

After installing the shades, I paired them with my Home Assistant hub and added them to my smart home configuration.

From there, I could control them through Home Assistant and incorporate them into automations alongside other connected devices.

That’s a big advantage over shades that can only be operated through a proprietary mobile app.

For example, smart shades can be incorporated into routines based on the time of day, room occupancy, or other conditions monitored by a smart home system.

It’s also possible to coordinate them with lighting and other connected devices, depending on how your automations are configured.

I additionally exposed the shades to Alexa through my Home Assistant setup, allowing me to control them using voice commands.

Having multiple ways to operate them is a definite plus.

I can use the physical remote when I want something simple, Home Assistant when I want more advanced control, or Alexa when I don’t feel like reaching for anything.

Importantly, Yoolax offers other motor technologies, including Bluetooth and Matter options on supported models. The best choice depends on your smart home equipment.

For my setup, Zigbee was the obvious choice, and I’m glad Yoolax offers it.

The Included Remote and Solar Panel Options

Even though I primarily wanted the shades for smart home integration, I wouldn’t underestimate the usefulness of a traditional remote control.

Not everyone in a household wants to open an app or issue a voice command every time they need to adjust a window shade.

Sometimes, pressing a button is simply easier.

I selected Yoolax’s 16-channel remote, which supports controlling multiple shades individually or in groups. It’s a practical option for homes with several motorized window treatments, since you don’t need a separate remote for every shade.

One thing I especially appreciated was that the shades arrived already programmed to the remote.

That eliminated an extra setup step and meant the shades were immediately usable after installation, even before I connected them to Home Assistant.

I also selected solar panel options during customization.

Motorized shades need power, and rechargeable motors introduce the occasional task of keeping their batteries charged. An appropriately positioned solar panel can help reduce how frequently manual charging is required.

This is especially appealing for windows that receive plenty of sunlight or shades mounted in locations where reaching the charging connection isn’t particularly convenient.

Of course, solar charging performance depends on the amount of light a panel receives, its positioning, and the shade’s power consumption.

It’s something I’d evaluate over a longer period before making any claims about battery life or whether charging can be avoided entirely.

Still, having solar panels available as an optional accessory is a thoughtful feature, particularly for anyone planning to install a larger number of motorized shades.

The One Issue: Valance Clearance and the MeasureFit Guarantee

While the ordering, shipping, and installation processes went smoothly, I did encounter one issue that required some back-and-forth with Yoolax customer support.

And it’s something worth highlighting because it could easily affect other customers.

Some of my windows have existing plantation shutters, and I needed the new shades to fit without preventing those shutters from closing.

Unfortunately, the valance style I originally selected ended up being just a few millimeters too wide.

It wasn’t a major measurement error, and the shades themselves were correctly sized. The problem was that the outer dimensions of the valances interfered with the clearance needed for the plantation shutters to close completely.

A few millimeters doesn’t sound like much, but when you’re dealing with window treatments that need to coexist in the same space, it can make all the difference.

The solution was to replace the original valances with Yoolax’s slimmer Sleek Top Rail option.

I had purchased the optional MeasureFit Guarantee when configuring the shades, so I initially hoped the replacement would be covered.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t.

Yoolax explained that the MeasureFit Guarantee applies to sizing issues involving the width and length of the shade itself. It doesn’t cover clearance problems caused by the valance dimensions.

That’s an important distinction, and one I hadn’t fully appreciated when placing my order.

To Yoolax’s credit, customer support did work with me on a solution and we were able to get the replacements processed without an additional fee.

I don’t necessarily consider this a major strike against the company. The shade measurements were correct, and the guarantee does have specific limitations.

Still, I think Yoolax could make the overall dimensions and clearance requirements of its different valance styles more prominent during customization.

If you already have plantation shutters, window handles, or other hardware close to your mounting area, I’d strongly recommend checking the full depth and width of the selected top rail or valance before ordering.

Don’t assume that correctly measuring the window opening guarantees that every decorative component will fit.

It’s a small detail that can save some money and frustration later.

Pricing, Customization, and Overall Value

One of the challenges with evaluating custom window shades is that there’s no single price that represents what everyone will pay.

With Yoolax, the final cost depends on your window dimensions, fabric selection, motor choice, and additional accessories.

The ability to customize so many different aspects of the shades is a major advantage, but it’s also something to keep in mind when budgeting.

A basic configuration may look attractively priced at first, but upgrading the motor or adding a solar panel, premium valance, and remote can increase the total.

For example, Zigbee and Matter motors may cost more than the standard Bluetooth configuration, depending on the product. Yoolax also offers optional extended motor coverage and measuring protection on eligible shades.

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend selecting every upgrade just because it’s available.

Instead, think about how you’ll actually use the shades.

If you’re only interested in opening and closing a bedroom shade with a remote, you may not need the same configuration as someone building a fully automated smart home.

For me, spending extra on Zigbee connectivity made sense because it allowed the shades to work with my existing Home Assistant installation.

The solar panel option was also appealing because I wanted to reduce the hassle of charging.

I particularly like that Yoolax lets customers make these decisions individually. You aren’t forced into a single technology or accessory bundle.

The replacement valance situation did add an unexpected expense to my experience, so I’d factor careful hardware measurements into any assessment of the overall value.

At the end of the day, customization is only valuable if you select the right combination of options for your particular windows.

Yoolax Pros and Cons

After going through the full process of ordering, installing, and connecting my Yoolax shades, there are several things I’d highlight for anyone considering the brand.

The biggest positives revolve around the straightforward installation and broad customization options. I also appreciated being able to integrate the shades into my existing smart home without abandoning the convenience of a physical remote.

My main reservations have less to do with the shades themselves and more to do with choosing the right configuration before ordering.

When you’re buying custom window treatments, details such as valance clearance and optional accessories deserve a little extra attention.

Pros

The measurement videos and step-by-step configuration process made ordering custom shades surprisingly straightforward.

Clear instructional videos helped me install all of my shades within a few hours.

Zigbee support allowed me to integrate the shades with Home Assistant and expose them to Alexa.

The included remote arrived preprogrammed, making the shades immediately usable.

Different fabrics, motor choices, valances, and solar charging accessories make it easier to tailor the shades to individual rooms.

Cons

The decorative valance dimensions can create clearance issues, particularly with existing plantation shutters.

The optional guarantee didn’t cover my valance clearance problem, although customer support offered discounted replacements.

Motor upgrades, solar panels, and other accessories can increase the final price beyond the initial shade cost.

Final Verdict: Would I Recommend Yoolax Smart Shades?

Overall, my experience with Yoolax has been positive.

From the initial ordering process to installation and smart home integration, the company delivered on several of the things I was hoping for.

The customization process was straightforward, the measurement guides were easy to understand, and the shades arrived in good condition after a reasonable production and shipping period.

Installation was also much easier than I expected. Being able to complete the entire project within a few hours, rather than spending an entire weekend figuring things out, was a welcome surprise.

But the biggest attraction for me is the smart home compatibility.

I specifically wanted motorized shades that would work within my existing Home Assistant ecosystem, and Yoolax’s Zigbee motor option made that possible.

Being able to control the shades through a remote, Home Assistant, or Alexa offers the kind of flexibility I was looking for.

The one frustrating part of the experience was discovering that my selected valances interfered with my plantation shutters.

Although the issue wasn’t covered by the MeasureFit Guarantee, Yoolax did offer discounted replacement parts, which I appreciated. I just wish the clearance considerations had been more obvious during ordering.

I’d also reserve judgment on long-term motor durability and battery performance until I’ve had more time with the shades. Those are important considerations for any motorized window treatment.

So, would I recommend Yoolax?

Yes, particularly if you’re looking for customizable motorized shades that can integrate with an existing smart home setup.

The ordering and installation processes were refreshingly manageable, and the variety of options makes Yoolax worth considering for different rooms and window styles.

Just take your time when measuring, double-check the dimensions of any valances or top rails, and carefully choose the motor technology that works with your smart home.

A little extra preparation can go a long way toward making an already straightforward experience even smoother.
